Heads up: Our Ideas Factory has been refreshed, levelled up, and grown-up into Alphero Intelligence. Some of our old posts are pretty cool tho'. Check this one out.

- One of the problems with presenting customer research insights in traditional ways is that it can sometimes strip the emotion and intent out of peoples’ words.
- We came up with the novel approach to use Apple’s Memoji feature to create virtual versions of interviewees as part of a client strategy engagement.
- Watch the video example to see how it works in practice and catch the bloopers reel at the end.
The best strategies and user experiences are born from truly understanding your user’s needs and wants, and each step of the customer journey. One of the problems with presenting customer research insights in traditional ways (presentations, reports, quotes etc.) is that it can sometimes strip the emotion and intent out of peoples’ words. You lose their facial expressions and tone of voice - often as important as the words themselves. We wanted to find a creative way to bring the voice of the customer to life for clients (and their senior stakeholders) while still respecting the anonymity of the interviewees.
One of our Experience Researchers came up with the novel approach to use Apple’s Memoji feature to create virtual versions of interviewees as part of the customer research we did for a strategy engagement for a client. To be totally honest we weren’t sure how the client would take it-it was a little left field-but they loved it!
This all went down during lockdown so our Experience Research had to get creative. The original interviews were done over Zoom and recorded. He took audio sound bites from the customer interviews, created individual Memojis for each one, and then dressed himself up in varying outfits and located himself in different areas of his very small bach to make each one look totally unique. The hardest part was replicating the original expressions and gestures, along with lip synching what the customers had said, so that the Memoji mouth movements matched the real customers’ video clips.
We can’t share the original video with you due to confidentiality, so we created our own example, asking our team to weigh in on the age old debate of Apple vs Android phone. Thankfully we could use the Memoji feature with each of the interviewees in person this time around. Make sure you watch till the end; the bloopers had us all in hysterics!
